We need to be able to rapidly determine whether a person has been exposed to an infectious agent, and we also need capabilities for detecting these agents in the environment. Portable biosensors have been developed to detect the exact DNA sequences of pathogens in the atmosphere. Such rapid detection systems provide the precious time necessary for evacuation, vaccination or other prophylactic measures necessary to save lives.

Diagnostics
Methods for detection of NIAID Category A-C priority agents.
Tests that evaluate the possible spectrum of antimicrobial resistance or genetic manipulation.
High-throughput screens (e.g., microchip-based platforms) containing microbial signature profiles.
Functional genomic tools to identify multiple organisms simultaneously.
Novel immune assays to study human immune responses.
Identification of novel or improved biomarkers for human immune activation.
In vivo imaging methods and development of contrast reagents for visualization of pathogens or host immune responses in vivo.
Clinical diagnostic tools for human eczema.
